Finding solutions for childhood food insecurity

About Childhood Food Solutions (CFS)

CFS Mission Statement:

The mission of Childhood Food Solutions is to develop solutions for childhood food insecurity that can be applied in a community, tested for effectiveness and duplicated in other communities.

History and Geographical Focus:

Childhood Food Solutions (CFS) was founded in July of 2007 by seven individuals in Cincinnati, Ohio, who were convinced of the overwhelming need to feed hungry children and convicted by a desire to do something about hunger in their community. They focused on zip code 45225, an area of high poverty, high crime and hungry, food-insecure children.

CFS began its work at Ethel M. Taylor Academy in September of 2007, in partnership with Pipkins Fruit & Vegetable Market. “Weekend Sacks” of food (about 12 oz. of food per child) are distributed every Friday to about 430 children. On December 21, 2007, CFS and Pipkins also provided “Winter Break Sacks” containing over five pounds of food to these 430 children to help them make it until December 31 when the government checks arrived.

In March of 2008, in partnership with Pipkins, Aldi and Sam’s Club, CFS was able expand the program to provide “Spring Break Sacks” to children at both Taylor Academy and Roll Hill Elementary (the other Pre-K through 8th Grade public school within 45225), reaching approximately 1,000 children with 6.5 pounds of food each. Sacks were assembled by volunteers at the Fay Apartments Community Center (in the neighborhood of Roll Hill School). All of these efforts have been very successful and have been met with enormous appreciation not just by the children receiving the sacks, but also by their parents and grandparents. Teachers and other school employees have recognized routine hunger in their students and gladly help with food distribution and express gratitude for the work of CFS. When the Spring Break Sacks arrived at Taylor, one of the school cafeteria workers came running up to thank us for helping fill the need she sees on school days but is unable to fill during breaks.
